Weligama supermarkets are a great place to food shop if you want to save on your dining expenses. After all, your food bill is a big part of your vacation spending. There are four major Weligama grocery stores to choose from; Cargills FoodCity Weligama, P-Mart Super-center Weligama, Sathosa and Global Supermarket. Each one of these supermarkets has a wide variety of local and international food products to choose from. Weligama has many pharmacies, scattered throughout the town area, and these pharmacies stock an impressive range of medications. By law, all pharmacies should be under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist, and the importation and manufacturing of medications is regulated by the Ministry of Health. For the tourist, getting access to medication is generally not a problem, unless your prescription drugs are rare. If you are taking prescription medication, bring an adequate supply with you. If you lose or misplace your medication, the local pharmacy should be able to source these for you. In Sri Lanka,  some of the prices for drugs are fixed and thus the same in all the pharmacies. Pharmacies almost always have a white sign with green letters hanging out front.  This sign usually also displays a green/red cross.

The prescription rules are not much as strict in Sri Lanka as in many other countries. If you need a prescription for get a medical drug in Sri Lanka, if not in one pharmacy, then perhaps in the next. In case this is not available in the hotel than they can find it at Wine/Liquor shops. Or you can buy yourselves at one of the shops.

Alcohol is not allowed to be served at all  Buddhist Poya days (check Sri Lanka calendar) and that law even applies to bars, restaurants and hotels (although some of the hotels do still serve alcohol and that has something to do with ‘making the tourists happy’. Bars, however, are always closed that day). That means if you want to go and grab a beer with some friends, and it’s during Poya days, you will find it virtually impossible to find a bar that’s open and selling booze.

Arrack is a distilled alcoholic drink typically produced in the Sri Lanka, made from the fermented sap of coconut flowers or sugarcane. There are some excellent flavors of arrack in liquor shops in Weligama. It is good to give it a try for local liquor though.It is usually find cheaper than others.

Big stores like Abans showroom, Damro showroom, Singer outlet, Softlogic outlet in the Weligama will provide electronic goods and appliances with a warranty.And if you are looking for a Apple/iPhone related appliance it is better to go Galle or Colombo.
