Weligama is extremely popular for scuba diving for many reasons; it’s cheap, it offers rare and unique species sightings, the top-side beauty is amazing, the culture fascinating, the beaches pristine, and the list goes on. From experienced divers to brand new, this is the place. Want to learn to dive, or simply to upgrade your skills? Weligama is a great place to achieve your PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certificate. Weligama is an exceptional experience in many ways, so here’s an overview of the diving and snorkeling opportunities. This should be helpful to the visitor who has never dived before and has some curiosity about seeing coral and fish in tropical water. Diving day trips from Kapparathota operate throughout the year. Both beginners and experienced divers will appreciate the underwater scenery at Weligama beach.

No need prior experience:

Never put on a scuba gear before? Don’t worry, our dive center Weligama cater to nearly all levels of PADI courses, from first-timer diver (Try Diving) up to PADI OWSI (Open Water Scuba Instructor). That means certified divers can seek further training with them, too. No matter your level of confidence or previous experience is, they are ready to help.

Diving Sites around Weligama bay:

Yala Rock
Yala Rock is a rocky area with big rocks of 15 meters high (and 5 meters below the surface). Besides the massive rocks, there are some small caves where you can see a huge variety of fish. Among some of the most interesting finds are rays, turtles and napoleon parrot fish. There are also many different kinds of colourful corals. During night diving, its possible to see lobsters walking across the bottom. The maximum depth for diving is 24 meters and normally the dive time will be about 45 minutes with a 10 liter bottle. The dive site is located a 15 minute boat ride from Bay Beach Hotel.

Coral Reef
This massive coral reef extends an impressive 700 meters and protects the few fishing boats that lay inside the natural harbor. Besides the beautiful and colourful corals, you may see sea anemones and many species of fish. The sea-bed is a very flat area, ensuring excellent visibility This dive site is not very deep which allows us to make long dives of more than an hour each. It can be reached in a 10 minute boat ride from Bay Beach Hotel.


Mirissa Point
This is an ideal dive for beginners as it is not very deep, meaning that you can stay underwater for periods of more than an hour. It is also an excellent site for night diving when one can see sepia, octopus and sleeping parrot fish in the sand or small caves. It is located a 15 minute boat ride from Bay Beach Hotel.

Prince Heinrich Patch (PHP)
Among the most celebrated dive sites at Weligama is the Prince Heinrich Patch (PHP), situated within a 30-minute boat ride towards the south of Weligama Bay. A 25 minute boat ride from Bay Beach Hotel the trip to this site is a very pleasant journey along the shore in the direction of Mirissa. We then head out to sea for about 4 km to an underwater hill that rises up to 7 meters below the water's surface. The area is especially good for seeing big rays, murrain and parrot fish. Maximum depth of the dive will be 22 meters.


Weather:

Its tropical location ensures that Sri Lanka has a hot and humid climate year-round. The country is warm and wet during the May to September monsoon, then dries out from November to mid-March. Air temperatures range from 30–35°C/85-95°F. The diving is typically good all year. During the rainy season, diving may not be at its best as storms reduce visibility. But there most of the dive spots where you can expect calm waters and clear visibility at almost any time of year.
Dive centres in Kapparathota and Palena are famous among Weligama scuba diving. They offer both fun dives and PADI-certified Open Water diving courses and adventures.

Weligama Bay Dive Center
Weligama Bay Dive Center was established in 2013 by Thaminda K.Kumara, an IDC Staff Instructor since 2014. With 20 years’ experience working in dive industry, he has built up a great reputation for safety and professionalism in Sri Lanka and the greater diving community. Sahan Damayantha, Thaminda’s nephew, is currently managing both dive shops, as well as working as a PADI OWSI instructor. They both currently operate two PADI 5* Dive Resorts in Sri Lanka.

At Cape Weligama. Borderlands Adventure Centre is located on the east beach of Cape Weligama, a brisk 2 – 3-minute walk away. As an official PADI Dive Center, Ocean Safari by Borderlands offers all the range of PADI courses, from Open Water Divers to professional Divemaster. Our Sports Center, right on Turtle Bay, just out of Weligama town, has an extensive range of SCUBA gear in excellent condition for all sizes (including children, who can enjoy breathing underwater from the age of 8).
