Midigama Beach Sri Lanka


Midigama is Weligama’s baby brother. A small surf town on the southern tip of Sri Lanka that can be easily missed but definitely NOT to be missed. It is a popular surfing beach in the southern part of the country. It is located between Galle to the east and Weligama and Mirissa to the west. Midigama is 150 kilometers south of Colombo (2.5 hours) and only 4 kilometers (5 minutes) from Weligama.

The big draw of Midigama is that it doesn’t feel as touristy or chaotic as other towns on the Southwest coast. Its central location means that more surf spots can be found in both directions by tuk tuk or scooter, and it’s a great base for exploring the local area and sightseeing. Whale watching, Galle Fort, and Handunugoda tea plantation are all less than a 45 minute drive away.

Most Midigama, hostels offer surf camps, which cater to surfers of all levels from beginner to pro. Learners can usually work with a surf instructor in a one-on-one or group setting as they gear up the confidence to get up on their board. More experienced surfers can work with a local surfer who can show them where to catch the best waves and help them with local transport around Midigama.

Best time to go: Midigama beach

The best time to visit the Southwest coast of Sri Lanka is from the end of October to early April. During these months you can expect the majority of days to be dry and sunny and the conditions for surfing are ideal with consistent swell and offshore winds.

How to visit Midigama from Weligama

Travelers can easily come to the Midigama from Weligama via tuk tuk that will cost you around  1 - 2 USD. And even travelers can take a public bus from Weligama bus stop for Galle. Matara - Galle bus just travel through Midigama village, so travelers can easily get down from Midigama bus stop to reach Midigama beach.

Luckily, hostels in Midigama, Sri Lanka, are never too far from the beach, so after a long day playing in the sand and sun, you can relax back in your dorm or private room. Most Midigama, Sri Lanka hostels also offer daily yoga practice to help ease your tired muscles.
