Travelers need to go the main bus station in Kandy city. It is located in the city central of Kandy near Kandy railway station. There are three types of bus stops in the city. They are Good Shed bus stop, Intercity bus stop, Colombo private bus stand. Intercity bus stop has only A/C buses towards Colombo capital (most of the buses). Good Shed bus stop and Colombo private bus stand has normal buses (most of them are non AC). There is only one buses which will direct travel to Matara. It is a luxury highway bus which is leaving from Kandy at 05:30 AM. Because there is no direct buses available to go to Weligama, we highly recommend to use train. Instead if you miss the train and you did not wait for the next train bus is a good option.


Because of no direct bus availability towards Weligama, travelers need to come to Colombo main bus stop and take Colombo - Matara bus or Colombo - Matara train. Traveler have two choices either get in to AC buses or non AC buses towards Colombo. Buses line up in Intercity bus stop (in Kandy town) or Colombo private bus stand (in Kandy town). Take the Colombo - Kandy bus route number 01 from the bus station (Please ask help from the information center inside the bus station). Bus fare for Colombo from Kandy between 3 - 4 USD. Traveler can easily identify the bus line up location which is nearby the station, If you take Kandy - Matara bus, traveler can easily find a seat to sit. Colombo - Matara buses operate all the day and all time. But after 20:00, operate frequency of buses decrease. It is advisable avoid stay public places like bus stations after 20:00. From Kandy train station traveler can take a straight train to Weligama. Please read this article regarding the train timetables towards Weligama. There is only one direct train that heading towards Matara will stop at Weligama railway station. This train starts at 05:00 AM, and it has transit in Maradana railway station. At Maradana railway station travelers need to transit in to Matara train in order to go to Weligama. But if the traveler does not able to get the direct train in the morning. It is Highly recommend the train as the touring method when you equipped with heavy backpacks. But conditions inside trains are decent and less comfortable especially lavatory etc... Trains may get more crowded in festive and vacation months like April, August, December. Ticket fare would be less than 3 USD. Some of the taxi services nearby Kandy city has bit hire rates. Currently Pickme, Uber taxi services the only taxi service which operated in the Colombo area available in Kandy. But it is highly doubtful that those taxi may travel towards Weligama. Therefore we highly recommend to use public transport instead. If traveler needs any local taxi services like car or van, they were park nearby Kandy bus stand, other side of the road of the railway station.
